Committed to Your Mental Wellbeing

I am a registered and insured psychoanalyst with extensive clinical experience in mental health.

As well as being a clinician, I have spent years researching autism during my PhD in Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge. I am also an MD (Medical Doctor) with extensive experience in psychiatry placements, which has deeply informed my approach to psychoanalytic practice.

I offer personalized psychoanalytic services in comfortable settings in Cambridge and London, or online via secure video sessions for anyone based in the UK. My services are available in both English and Spanish to ensure you can express yourself in the language you feel most comfortable with.

What is Psychoanalysis?

Psychoanalysis is both a theory of the mind and a therapeutic practice that helps individuals understand themselves more deeply and make meaningful changes in their lives.

"Psychoanalysis is a method of mind investigation. It is a body of knowledge about human experience. It is a treatment for psychological difficulties. It is a set of inquiries into art, literature, anthropology, religion, and social dynamics. It is a method of treating certain forms of ignorance, suffering, and unhappiness."

A Space for Self-Exploration

Psychoanalysis provides a unique setting where you can explore thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that may be outside your awareness but significantly impact your life. This process helps uncover patterns that may be holding you back from living fully.

Understanding the Unconscious

Through our work together, you'll gain insight into unconscious processes that influence your relationships, work life, and sense of self. Psychoanalysis helps bring these hidden dynamics into awareness where they can be understood and transformed.

Lasting Change

Unlike approaches that focus solely on symptom reduction, psychoanalysis addresses the root causes of emotional difficulties. This often leads to more profound and enduring changes that extend beyond specific problems to enrich your whole life.

My Approach

I believe in creating a safe, non-judgmental environment where we can work together to explore your inner world and develop a deeper understanding of yourself.

The Therapeutic Relationship

The relationship between analyst and patient is central to the analytic process. This unique relationship provides a secure base from which to explore difficult emotions and experiences. Through our interactions, patterns from other relationships in your life often emerge, offering valuable insights.

Free Association

I encourage you to speak freely about whatever comes to mind—thoughts, feelings, dreams, memories, or fantasies. This practice, known as free association, helps access unconscious material that may be influencing your life in significant ways.

Working Through

Psychoanalysis involves not just intellectual understanding but also emotional processing. "Working through" refers to the repeated exploration of difficult patterns and conflicts until they lose their grip on you, allowing for new ways of being in the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

Psychoanalysis is a form of therapy that focuses on unconscious processes as they are manifested in a person's present behavior. The goals of psychoanalysis are to help individuals better understand the unconscious forces that drive their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It's particularly effective for addressing longstanding patterns that cause distress or dissatisfaction in life.

Psychoanalysis can help with a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties, including:
  • Depression, anxiety, and mood disorders
  • Relationship and intimacy issues
  • Identity and self-esteem concerns
  • Work-related difficulties and creative blocks
  • Trauma and loss
  • Persistent patterns of behavior that cause distress
  • Feelings of emptiness or lack of fulfillment
  • Difficulties with life transitions
Psychoanalysis is particularly effective for addressing long-standing issues that may have been resistant to other approaches.

Psychoanalysis works by creating a safe and confidential space where unconscious thoughts, feelings, and patterns can gradually emerge into awareness. Through regular sessions, usually multiple times per week, we explore your thoughts, feelings, dreams, memories, and the therapeutic relationship itself. This process allows us to identify recurring patterns and unconscious influences that may be affecting your life.

As these patterns become conscious, you gain greater freedom to make different choices and develop new ways of relating to yourself and others. The analytic process involves not just intellectual understanding but also emotional working-through, which leads to deeper and more lasting change.

Standard sessions typically last 50 minutes. Sessions regularly occur 1-2 times per week, depending on your needs and goals. This flexibility allows for a deeper and more intensive exploration when needed.

The frequency of sessions is something we will discuss together based on your circumstances. The initial consultation is £60, during which we will organize the cost of ongoing sessions. In psychoanalysis, money also has a symbolic value. Ongoing fees and means of payment are negotiated at the beginning of each treatment, depending on session frequency and individual circumstances.

Psychoanalysis is typically a longer-term commitment than many other forms of therapy. The duration varies greatly depending on individual needs and goals, but often ranges from several months to several years. This extended timeframe allows for deep, transformative work that addresses root causes rather than just symptoms.

We'll regularly assess your progress and adjust our approach as needed. Some people find that they gain significant benefits within a few months, while others choose to continue the work over a longer period as they discover new layers of understanding and growth.

Psychoanalysis differs from other therapies in several key ways:
  • Depth and breadth: Psychoanalysis explores unconscious processes and early experiences in great depth, looking beyond immediate symptoms to understand underlying patterns.
  • Frequency and duration: Sessions typically occur multiple times per week over an extended period, allowing for more intensive and comprehensive work.
  • Therapeutic relationship: The relationship between analyst and analysand is itself an important focus of exploration.
  • Free association: You are encouraged to speak freely about whatever comes to mind, rather than focusing on specific problems or goals.
  • Holistic change: Rather than targeting specific symptoms, psychoanalysis aims at deeper structural change in how you understand yourself and relate to others.
While cognitive-behavioral therapies often focus on specific symptoms or behaviors, psychoanalysis takes a more holistic approach aimed at transformative change. This can lead to more comprehensive and lasting results, though it typically requires a greater investment of time.

Psychoanalysis may be particularly beneficial if:
  • You're experiencing recurring patterns in your life that cause distress
  • Previous therapy has been helpful but you feel there's more to explore
  • You're interested in self-understanding and personal growth
  • You value depth and are willing to commit to a process of exploration
  • Your difficulties seem complex or long-standing
The best way to determine if psychoanalysis is right for you is to schedule an initial consultation. This gives us both an opportunity to meet, discuss your concerns, and decide together whether this approach would be beneficial for you.

I offer sessions in both English and Spanish. Being able to express yourself in your preferred language can be particularly important in psychoanalysis, where nuances of language and expression play a significant role. I understand that emotional content can often be more accessible in one's native language, and I am committed to providing a space where you can communicate in the way that feels most natural to you.

The initial consultation fee is £60. During this session, we will discuss your needs and organize the cost of ongoing sessions.

In psychoanalysis, money also has a symbolic value. Ongoing fees and means of payment are negotiated at the beginning of each treatment, depending on session frequency and individual circumstances. Sessions typically occur 1-5 times per week, and the cost will reflect the agreed-upon frequency and your specific situation.
